Red Pill (Matrix) Screen Saver — MAC OS X Intel (x86)

Posted in General, apple by twothirds on the May 22nd, 2006

I just got a MAC. Yeah? Damn the “open apple” key and its non-Cntrl c/v copy/paste functionality. Anyway, one of the first things I looked for was a “matrix” screensaver. I found “Red Pill“, but it was not Intel friendly. Taking some advice from the forum, I grabbed the source and compiled an intel version. Not too difficult, but I have no idea how to properly package the app–I just dumped everything into a zip file. So, with no warranty of any kind, and kudos to the original auther, the Intel Red Pill bits are here.

Update: I recompiled with the “universal” option. This might work on Power PC as well, but since I do not have a PPC box YMMV.

Update Jan 16 2008: File moved to off-site storage to lower my bandwidth costs.

I just started using a Mac.

If you go to Apple - System Preferences - Keyboard & Mouse - Modifier Keys (button), you can switch the APPLE and CTRL keys’ behavior.

This makes the transition much easier (CTRL-A does select-all, CTRL-C does copy, etc.) although the Terminal behavior is weird (APPLE-C now aborts a process).

    Hope that helps.

I tried that, but it ended up confusing the hell out of me because of the “cntrl c” issue in a terminal. Swapping cntrl with caps and using the butler for key ramaps has proved most effective for me.

Cool. Not only can I now run my favorite screensaver for my G5 on the new MacBook, but I know who is behind my favorite RSS feed (3athlete). Keep up the good work!

    hi,

have you considered converting the matrixgl screensaver for intel mac? i think this one is slightly better than the RedPill one. i can send you the powerpc version if you want?

links from TechnoratiRed Pill— I have five (!) monitors on my desk at the new job. The three Apple displays are now running this. Now I just need to place them at different heights and grunge up the room a little.

    The legend lives on !

    Great work.

I’ve had the PPC version for years and years… my favourite of all times!

When Apple told me they could not fix my PowerBook and I was given a new MacBook for free, I was devastated I wouln’t be able to run Red Pill on an Intel !

Although it took me ages to find this version for Intel, now I couldn’t be happier !

    Bravo !

    keep up the good work.

    cheers,
    RV

This screensaver is ultima when used in conjunction with Magic Desktop Switcher. Nothing says “geek” more than a MacBook running on Intel with wallpaper that looks like the matrix.
